In the spring of 2019 it also came out that Epic’s crunch culture had, unsurprisingly, created a toxic work environment in the company. ![]() And while this practice appears to have stalled, Epic has made no moves to rectify what they’ve already done. As Yussef Cole so persuasively argues in an essay for Waypoint, this fits into the long history of appropriation of black culture, in which artistic expression is decontextualized, stripped of its original power and meaning, and repackaged for a mass, often white, audience. Epic stole dances, particularly those of black artists, and sold them to players without crediting or compensating those artists. Then there were the more serious problems. And I have no particular feelings for Epic, outside the natural revulsion I harbor for any big company.Ĥ. I like discrete game experiences, not endless daily ones. As a result, bankers themselves had to decide which banks were sound enough to reopen, farmers had to operate the crop control program, businessmen dominated the formulation and the implementation of the NRA industrial codes, existing state agencies had to administer the relief program, and the Army had to organize the Civilian Conservation Corps. The federal government, observed one historian, “had almost no institutional structure to which Europeans would accord the term ‘the State.’” It had neither the information nor the personnel to implement the policies launched in 1933. The government had to act quickly but there simply was not any established “state capacity” for the government to do so. ![]() But, in fact the emergency in 1933 led to constraints on rather than opportunities for federal power. Many officials who had served in government then returned to Washington in 1933. Wartime agencies from 1917to 1918 served as models for agencies like the NRA. There was much talk of the emergency as the equivalent of war and a justification for emergency presidential powers as in a time of war. Forty days into the Hundred Days there was no indication that there was to be an industrial recovery program-congressional action forced Roosevelt’s hand over that and over public works spending. Only when existing appropriations for relief were exhausted did he devise a temporary relief administration. He really only had definite plans for farm policy, the Tennessee Valley, and the Civilian Conservation Corps. There was no great federal blueprint that FDR wanted to impose on the country. In the Hundred Days, the New Deal established a farm program that told farmers what they could and could not plant (the Agricultural Adjustment Administration), created an industrial recovery program that set minimum prices and wages (the National Recovery Administration), launched the biggest public works program in the nation’s history (Public Works Administration), set up a national relief program (Federal Emergency Relief Administration), refinanced farm and home mortgages, regulated the stock market and banking, guaranteed bank deposits, and established the Tennessee Valley Authority. Eventually Congress passed an unprecedented sixteen pieces of major legislation. ![]() The response to FDR’s inaugural and from congressional leaders to his banking proposals encouraged him to ask Congress to stay in session. There was no Plan B if that appeal failed. The gamble paid off when people deposited more than they took out. It was still a tremendous gamble when the President went on the air on Sunday, March 12, to explain the crisis and make a “man-to-man appeal” for confidence when the banks reopened the next day. The key was not more credit (the banks had had plenty of that) but recapitalization through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation buying preferred stock in the banks. When he took office and shut the banks, he had to turn to held-over officials in the Treasury and Federal Reserve to dust off legislative proposals that they had devised in the Hoover years. He certainly had no plans to deal with the rapidly escalating banking crisis. The haste dictated by the economic crisis profoundly shaped the New Deal response in the Hundred Days.ĭespite the four months between election and inauguration, Roosevelt had few worked-out legislative or recovery plans. Roosevelt took advantage of the need to reopen the banks to ask Congress to stay in session to pass recovery and reform legislation. Walter Wyatt, Federal Reserve official, amazed at how unprepared the incoming Roosevelt administration was for the situation they faced on inauguration day, March 4, 1933. There wasn’t anybody in that entire Brains Trust apparently that had given any thought-they had absolutely no plans-or any real study to the problem created by this banking situation. ![]() ![]() ![]() I remember when one of Muse's programmers first made a pull request that added spyware to the program, which then caused the comments on the PR to become a massive shitshow where Audacity was dogpiled by everyone for adding telemetry, and from Google of all companies no less. It's funny what you can get attached to, huh? Real shame. This stupid little program has been a constant and reliable piece of kit in my life for years. I can't help but feel really disappointed, personally. I'm probably going to start looking for an alternative at some point, but there's a little bit of solace for you regarding this development. I personally haven't updated my version of Audacity in the last 4 years because I haven't needed to. If you're currently using an older version, keep it! Anything older than v3.0.3 is free of the Telementry thing, which means it doesn't "talk" back to the developers and feed them your info. There is some slight good news too: This is all regarding the NEW version of the software. Here's a peek at who's going to have access to your data:Īnother interesting aside is because of this new change, the software now has to restrict itself from being used by people under the age of 13, which naturally violates its own GPL licence agreement it uses, so there's a well-earned can of worms the bastards will have to wrestle with now.įortunately because Audacity's software has been open-source for two decades, you can bet your arse there are some cunning programmers out there coding up some forks right now and there's already some chatter about it going on across GitHub and Reddit. In the latest version of Audacity, they've switched up their Privacy Policy to include spying on your hardware for the purposes of "Law Enforcement" and don't tell you anything much more specific than that. Thanks to this news, my concerns were validated: the plucky little 20 year old program that has been a long-time stalwart of open-source software that I myself have been using for over a decade has become what I had originally feared: A corporate product that wants to treat you as the product by sucking up your user data. When I originally heard that news, I was very worried that the program wouldn't be the same. To elaborate, a while back the development team were bought out by some company called MuseGroup. I have some disappointing news for all audiophiles and other similar long-time users: The long time and much respected open-source audio editing program, Audacity, has more or less turned itself into spyware. ![]() ![]() The hashtag has been used in many creative ways. If you’re used to Lightspeed Onsites powerful inventory tools or run frequent sales, this might be a dealbreaker for you. This means added cost, complexity, and training. The week following the publication of that initial blog post was a flurry of statements from both sides, what Nichiporchik describes as a "political-ish press release fight." Tinybuild's stance had an impact - certain YouTubers backed out of sponsorship deals, and Humble Bundle reiterated its own policies around fraudulent transactions - but G2A's own response fell short of what Nichiporchik believed the situation demanded. Nichiporchik has no regrets over highlighting the problem, but he claims to be less than satisfied with the way the situation played out. Or what if you're actually wrong? The reason we had to call out is because they supplied us with the data, and then said they wouldn't pay." "This industry is very small, so it's always extremely scary to call someone out," Nichiporchik says, several months on. It's part of my past, and I get where the people that drive the economies of these key resellers come from" A lack of even the most basic checks meant that G2A's model was, to use Nichiporchik's description, " a black market economy." Much of this money had come from keys purchased with stolen credit cards, Nichiporchik said, meaning that not only was not a single dollar making it back to the developer, but the developer was also being hit with chargebacks when the fraud was discovered. In June this year, Nichiporchik did just that with G2A, a popular online marketplace for the resale of Steam keys, which had hosted around 25,000 sales of Tinybuild games for some $200,000. Copycat design is just one of many issues that indie developers face in this ultra-competitive industry, and Tinybuild is clearly unafraid to meet those issues head on. This isn't the first time Nichiporchik has felt moved to speak out in this manner. Nichiporchik issued a copyright takedown, and explained his reasoning in a typically candid blog post. There were glaring similarities, he said, between N-Dream's browser game Runorama and Speedrunners, the sleeper hit that helped to establish Tinybuild as a rising force in indie publishing.
